Today is time to discover John Irving, a bestselling American novelist and Academy Award-winning screenwriter. He is one of my favourite writers and I read all his books. My favorite ones are
- The World According to Garp
- The Hotel New Hampshire
- A Prayer for Owen Meany
- The Cider House Rules
Several of his novels were made into films and for The Cider House Rules, John Irving himself wrote the script.

Here is the film synopsis:
Homer Wells (Tobey Maguire), an orphan in 1940s Maine, is adopted by the orphanage's director, Dr. Wilbur Larch (Michael Caine). Larch grooms Homer for a career in medicine and the inheritance of the institution, but Homer doesn't give in to this design so easily. He wants to see for himself what the world has to offer, and it is this curiosity that lands him at the family farm of Wally (Paul Rudd). Homer embraces his new life, picking apples and eventually falling in love with Wally's girlfriend, Candy (Charlize Theron), while Wally is overseas fighting in World War II. As the story progresses, Homer's firm antiabortion stance is challenged when an incestuous situation is brought to light. Irving's screen adaptation of his novel treats it with a fair eye, and director Hallstrom elicits assured performances from Caine--who took home an Academy Award--and Maguire, making for satisfying and poignant viewing.
